The Magic Box - Netflix on your display
I thought I remembered a thread on here regarding using “The Magic Box” to watch streaming apps on the Defenders Display Screen.
Has anyone seen this and gotten it to function properly on the Defender Screen?
I have seen somebody on one of the facebook groups using one of these on the new Defender screen https://digidash.store/ although annoyingly I can't find the post now. They were streaming Netflix onto the screen via the box.
I actually bought a box from Hunters Prestige here in the UK, it's basically a box which runs an Android operating system and plugs into the cars USB socket, it means you can run certain apps like Netflix or the Ordnance Survey maps we use on the screen, it can also mirror your phone screen onto the car screen.
I did see in one of the facebook groups that some of these boxes had stopped working after the Pivi update 4.0.0, luckily mine still works
The crux of it is that you plug it into the USB port and it's recognized as the carplay phone. Then you can mirror your phone to the device.
The negatives are that they take a long time to boot and connect. They use the wifi on your phone and not bluetooth, so you need to make sure you have wifi on your phone and that the device can connect to it. I've been a passenger in a car that had something similar and it was interesting to be able to play video on the move, but there was a lot of admin to get it working each time and wasn't all that reliable. For the price it's probably a decent novelty for a road trip, but personally I wouldn't think of it as a reliable way to make a connection and be able to offer video service to passengers. YMMV
