question about driving in the sand?
live on Hatteras island
with r22 low profile tires concern about deflating them anyone with experience?
Can't speak for 22's as I have 20" wheels with slightly larger AT tires (33" KO2's). But I would expect that if I had issues, you would have more issues on 22's.
The 1st time I took mine on sand, it was great fun. The car was amazing but I deflated too far to like 8-10 psi (I can't remember?) and debeaded two tires acting like a numb nuts. Traction was really good though... until the tires deflated. I got a bit over confident and forgot how aired down I was. I then aired up to 18 or so and had no more issues but the traction was noticeably not as good, so a balance.
In both cases, what caused my tires to come off the rims was wheel spin. So if you air way down, I think the key is not spinning the tires to have a fighting chance.
All great fun though !
If I had any suggestion it would be to make sure your tire changing tools are accounted for in the boot and immediately remove the silly locking lug nuts and replace with new wheel nuts from dealer. The locking nuts were a real pain in the sand... And make sure you have a base to put your jack on in the sand. In my pic below you can see that I used a traction board and worked fine in a pinch.
