I also thought a RTT was overkill until I got one. Mine has a 3 inch foam mattress, I can store my pillows and sleeping bags in the tent when folded up. At first, I was afraid of losing all my roof space in my Range Rover, but when u don't need to store sleeping bags, pillows and mattresses in the truck, I opened up tons of space. When we got on week long trips into Death Valley and Moab, the RTT is so worth it. In fact, I have spent nights traveling boondocking rather paying for a Motel as I find it more comfortable. So after a few extra nights, it paid for itself pretty quickly. But I also spend 30+ nights offroad a year.
No way I could have driven my Defender with 5 people (2 adults, 3 kids) and gear to Baja for 2300 miles without my RTT. We all slept up there!
The Wraptor 4K Overland Pros awning is awesome and sets up in 30 seconds. When we are in the desert, shade is a premium. Stop for lunch, whip open the awning and relax. Closes in under 2 minutes. Check out this Overland Bound video:

Our Boreas off-road squaredrop with GFC superlite on top for kid sleeping space. Kitchen in back, outdoor shower, heater, etc. superlite can go on the car for shorter jaunts. Touring the West next spring in this.
Here is my setup. On top, Gazelle T8 hub tent (two parents, a toddler, and two 50 pound dogs), an 11pound Propane tank, and a 95L Roam box. Inside, I have an artic cooler with 4 Durabox(collapsible when not in use). We carry clothes in a canvas duffle bag but just upgraded to the NorthFace Duffle. Its my daily driver and I have to park in parking garages so I need set up that I can easily take apart and load up when its go time.
Hey love your setup,
Had a quick question. On the Duraboxes how sturdy are those when erect? Could I stack them in the back of the defender then tie them down to the cargo straps decently tight without them collapsing? Mine arrives next week and im planning on doing a month long trip in it and trying to find the best boxes for that. Thanks!
