Default Opinion on going rate for 2021 110 S

As the title suggests, I am curious what everyones thoughts are on the value of a 2021 110 S. I'm thinking about selling mine and took it to CarMax to get an idea. They came back with 39k. That seems low. Just curious if anyone had any thoughts. Thanks in advance!

Specs:
2021
Pangea Green body with white roof
Black premium wheels
air suspension
off road package
Defender 110 S
37k miles
minor exterior scratches
4 inch crack on passenger side of windshield

Both Nada and KBB have pretty close rangers for both trade-in as well as private sale dollar figures. You are bound to get wide ranges of price opinions from just asking the forum. We are all biased to some degree. I just looked at NADA for my 23.5 X-Dynamic SE with options and trade-in is 71-77K and private is 74-79K.

Your spec and year looks to be Trade-in 42-48K and private 47-52K. I would fix the windshield and polish scratches for a better trade in. Dealer will need to put new tires on as well as fix the windshield in order to sell it. 39 is not a bad deal to just hand it over as is.

Damn I sold my 2020 to carmax for 85k in 2021. Prices have plummeted.

Used car prices in general are way down from what they used to be a couple of years ago. Also, new Defenders are now piling up in dealerships across the US, and some dealers are beginning to discount them. The Carmax offer of $39k is spot on given that the replacement of a windshield is roughly $2k.

Residual had you leased it was probably no more than 60% of msrp and potentially even a bit less. Ballpark what was your MSRP 62ish? So yea 37k ballpark residual for someone who leased to buy it out and resell it to carmax. Then carmax will probably want to resell it for at least 4k or 5k more than they pay you for it. Seems about right 39k, shop it around though you may get some dealerships to offer substantially more like 5k more on a trade plus if you financed instead of leased you may get to offset the sales tax on whatever you trade for, not an insignificant sum to be ignored, you lose that benefit if you sell it outright to carmax. There was a small window mid-pandemic where carmax overpaid an absurd amount for these things but that closed quickly and those of us who asked for appraisals in the aftermath of that got somewhat lowball offers from carmax IMO. I agree with the suggestion to get it fixed up, I usually even have mine detailed before I have appraisals.

Great responses from all. Thank you.

I got a quote from my local Safelite to replace with a non-LR windshield for $700. I think I will take them up on that.

Chief65- good point on getting it cleaned up before appraisals. I have had some of the Carmax people tell me that it doesn't make a difference, but I tend to disagree with those people. I think it does make a difference. I sold my truck to carmax during the time you are talking about Chief, for a little less then what they offered me for my Defender. I guess that's why I was a little surprised with the quote they came back with on my Defender.

My MSRP was around 69ish if I remember right. I think I will take it around to a couple dealerships and see what they offer for trade in like yall suggested. I will report back just for informational purposes for everyone.

Thanks again!

For informational purposes I just replaced the windshield (my 4th windshield!) on my 2022; about $1450, plus $280 installation at the dealer. My insurance pays so I wasn’t price shopping. But last time I checked with Safelite, they didn’t carry a compatible windshield for my truck (There are like 6 different possible windshield configs based on HUD, Heated and something else, and combinations of those.)

And for the record, the last time I replaced a windshield before this Defender? Uhhhh… never. 46 cars since 1978.

I would ALWAYS go with an OEM windshield. Aftermarket ones don't always calibrate well with the sensors and cameras, and sometimes the heating elements aren't always compatible with the car. Just something to be aware of.

You have to remember that carmax is nation wide and they will lowball you on your local trade and move it to the most desirable metro area to sell it. No dealer is willing to roll the dice on making 4-5k on your trade. They lowball you so they can make 12-15 on it. In the current market, they just wont risk rolling out 37-40k without a minimum guaranteed 10k payback. Preowned 2020 defenders in the SF Bay Area are 55-60 asking prices for your model and mileage ranges. Maybe they take 55 or even 50 if it sits long enough.

Strong resale was one of the considerations when I bought mine.
