If you think the SE is tough to find public land, you should NEVER visit Texas...

I do have the OnXOffroad app, but there’s just not very much available in the southeast, other than pay-to-play off-road parks. I don’t mind the paying part, but they tend to be made up of manufactured “elements” to test the truck on; been there/done that and now I really just want to spend 4+ hours driving a beautiful trail with great payoff visuals along the way or at the turn-around point.

Also, unfortunately it’s gotten way, way harder to find any public or acceptable private land to off-road on east of the Mississippi in the last 20-25 years. I drive out west every year for a 2-3 week stint in UT/CO/WY/AZ/NV/CA; things are glorious.
Kind of what I have been finding....hence the efforts to somewhat pool our collective resources and experiences

And for challenges, Potts Mountain Jeep Trail is a 15-mile point-to-point trail near Paint Bank, Virginia. It's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring.

I second AllTrails as an excellent tool for finding off-road opportunities.
any specifics you could share? Is camping available?

Here a few places I've been in the last 18 months after getting my Defender - all have primitive camping:

Green Ridge State Forest in MD (Greenridge State Forest (maryland.gov) 46,000 acres in western MD/Allegany county with lots of graded gravel roads with some nice overlooks of the Potomac River.

George Washington & Jefferson National Forests in VA (George Washington & Jefferson National Forests - Home (usda.gov) 1.8 million acres of land in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Trails range from difficult (George Washington & Jefferson National Forests - Potts Mountain Jeep Trail (Forest Road # 5036) (usda.gov) to moderate (Big Levels to the Blue Ridge OHV Route | Map, Guide - Virginia | AllTrails) to the milder Peter’s Mill Run & Tasker’s Gap trail (George Washington & Jefferson National Forests - Peters Mill Run/Taskers Gap OHV System (usda.gov). Check out 17 Best Off Road Trails in VA: Virginia - Off-Roading Pro (offroadingpro.com) for ideas.

And for the more adventurous (which I have not yet done) there's a 4-day, 700 mile route through the George Washington National Forest including segments of Flagpole ****, Reddish ****, Lake Moomaw, Monongahela National Forest, Canaan Loop, Dolly Sods, and Green Ridge State Forest. This route can be completed by most stock 4x4s with good AT tires. Expect pin-striping, mud, dust, and water crossings. And THIS is why I miss Virginia. Thanks, @POPTOPP for making me cry...

Love Texas! It's just that access to public lands isn't one of the boxes that get checked.

Agree, and truthfully, a lot of us go places and do things in our rigs.....now I (and maybe) we know of some additional recourses, but real world descriptions about difficulty, accessibility, etc. are things that you can only really get from first hand experience

If anyone is near NC, then you owe it to yourself to go to Uwharrie National Forest -->>

You'll see various 4x4 capable vehicles, mainly Jeep Wranglers, but I've seen G-Wagons, Defenders, Suzuki sidekicks, and homemade "truggies" and it's even great to be a spectator, especially watching vehicles traverse the 1 or 2 advanced trails.
