Default P400 Battery Replacement Questions

I'm almost at 41K miles and nearly 4 years of ownership and the Low Battery Warnings are becoming more frequent so it feels like it might be time to replace my battery.

For those who have done it, is it a simple swap, or is there programming that needs to be done at the dealer? Are you able to do the swap without removing the passenger seat, or does it require pulling that out to replace? Lastly, did you use the exact LR part, or did you replace with a non-LR solution?

I'm looking for more information on if this needs to be done by dealer or if I can simply do it, thank you!

I would check with your dealer, because this is not a simple battery. I had the same problem in my P400 at 25k miles and my dealer replaced it under warranty.

Thank you Muppetry; curious if anyone here has done it themselves since I'm hoping to avoid the dealer trip and prefer to do my own, thank you.

Battery replacement is pretty straight forward. Battery is under the passenger seat. Battery is a Group 49 AGM battery. replacement procedure is no different than any other car battery. Move passenger seat forward. remove cover. 10mm post bolts and nuts. I am not sure what the above post means by its not a simple battery? yes it is. Land rover Boise, Idaho replaced mine under warranty with an interstate battery of same size and type.

Thank you Silver, this is great! No need to remove seat, or re-program after replacement?

No need to remove seat. Battery is in a bit of a tight spot so some dexterity is required. Do check with dealership if defender is still under warranty. It will save you a couple hundred dollars. I am not aware of any programming needed. Do replace with same type and with an AGM battery not a lead flooded old school battery.

Good to know that you actually can use a generic battery. My dealer told me that it required the OEM unit due to the smart monitoring.

Now our defenders do have some sort of hybrid regenerative battery for the supercharger and I have no idea what the replacement of that entails or where it even lives. I would say that battery is not a simple battery.

My 2020 has a warranty that expires in June and it has 39,000 miles.

I just got my main battery and TMU battery replaced under warranty.

you should check with your dealer first if you’re under warranty!

We replaced our and it's fairly simple and straight forward. You will need to move the passenger seat forward, but there is no need to remove it. The access door offers sufficient room to get the old one out and the new one in, but it's a heavy battery and not the most convenient placement so it will take a little effort. I put a battery charger on the terminals under the hood just because I didn't want to risk losing any programming (that's probably not necessary, but years ago I lost my radio presets, and I've done it ever since)
