Default Powdercoated Cross Beam custom color Mod

When I ordered my D90 P300s there was no option choice for the dark grey cross beam.
(only on x-dynamic you did have that choice)
So I bought the workshop manual and watched the video from Powerful.co.uk for the steering inlay change.

In my case there are 6 magnesium parts which I have had powdercoated in Interpon Noir 2100 Sablé YW359F
Started with the steering Wheel, disconnect the battery after last turn for removing the airbag.

Unbolted the seats to get access to remove the side panels of the console, 6 bolts under there,
Removing everything else exept the upper dashboard, managed to get the long Beam out at last.

the six parts of magnesium ready for getting powdercoated in my custom color

Collected my parts and started to reassemble the steering wheel

So after 5 hours everything bolted back in and torqued as spec the result:

Some more pictures by daylight

Disclaimer, do not start this mod if you are not mechanicly inclined.

Holy crap, I would never do that just to change the color from medium gray to dark gray! And I AM mechanically inclined.

But glad it all went back together for you, hopefully without any rattles.

Wow! Totally amazed that you went thru that effort to change the color!! That is dedication right there. You're inspiring me to make the changes that I think are as important to me.

Brilliant job! I did not realize the steering wheel trim was also magnesium--assumed it was plastic. Or is that piece aluminum?

Yes they are all the same material Mg.
If you have the Meridian sound system the doorhandle surrounds are also from magnesium.

I had to take a look. I guess the meridian surround is standard on HSEs, 'cus I did not order it.

I would have just put the steering wheel back on and driven it stripped down. Been one of a kind for sure.
