Anybody nearby using a weed trimmer? My neighbor took out his car rear window while using a gas powered weed trimmer. I took out our patio sliding glass door with one as well. Entire tempered glass door looked like a giant spider web and the replacement cost was over $1000.
The vehicle was sat standing alone with no other cars around and suddenly a loud bang. Was a cold morning and the sun was on the rear window. My assumption is that it’s caused the glass to expand slightly and the rear window has gone and shattered. Waiting for main dealer to sort. Vehicle still under warranty but unsure yet what they are going to do about it. Happened 4 days ago now, no courtesy vehicle or answer as to what will be done to fix it….
All 4 corners went first then the middle gave way 110 defender 2022
I saw it on european forums, can't understand exact wording, but apparently there's some sort of auto defrost function when climate is in AUTO where rear glass is heated for a long time causing expansion.
seems to only happen on black defenders. my guess as a glass expert is that the thermal shock is from morning sunlight on a cold vehicle. the black heats up faster than other colors and that makes the thermal shock happen. glass does not like fast temp changes. even though its tempered laminate its still susceptible to thermal shock.

But the photos in this thread include a white Defender as well as grey.
