Default Rear washer not working

My ‘22 Defender 110 rear washer has stopped working. Was wondering if anyone has experienced this also. I can hear the pump running, but no fluid comes out. The reservoir is full and the front washers operate. I’ve removed the spare tire and disconnected the washer line from the blade assembly and I can blow through the fitting and hear air escaping the holes in the wiper blade, so there is no clog there, eliminating that. Before I begin tearing deeper into it, does anyone know where the washer pump is located, and also where the fluid reservoir is located? I want to try to push air or fluid through the lines, hoping that there is just a minor clog or buildup in the line leading to the rear door. I’m also figuring there might be one way valves installed to prevent fluid from flowing in reverse to avoid one having to purge the lines every time it calls for fluid. Also, does anyone out there know if the rear washer has its own pump? Typically, most vehicles have a single pump, with a diverter sending fluid to whichever washer is activated, but I’m not sure if the Defender has a separate pump for each windscreen. Thanks in advance for any info one can provide.

Today I just experienced exactly the same. MJ21.
The fluid reservoir is in fender of the passenger side, only 1 motor/pump for front and rear .
My first thought it/or was it 'frozen' .......

Did a bit of research as I was curious too... See attached, these are the 10 pages from the workshop manual on the front/rear washer pump. After a quick study, I wonder if you may have a loose (or plugged w debris) hose connection in your RF wheelwell behind the liner that goes to the rear.

Here's what page 9465 (!!!) of the 2020+ service manual says:

"A combined front/rear washer pump is installed at the base of the windshield washer reservoir. The headlamp washer pump is installed above the washer fluid level sensor. The front/rear washer pump supplies washer fluid to the windshield washer jets and the tailgate washer jet. The headlamp washer pump supplies fluid to the left and right headlamp washer jets."

And on page 9466, as I was wondering what then does the camera washing:WASHER JET - REAR PROXIMITY CAMERA (IF EQUIPPED)

When the vehicle is equipped with rear proximity camera, there is a washer jet located beside the camera in the rear bumper. The washer fluid feed hose from the tailgate washer is connected to the washer jet with a 'Y' connector. Therefore the washer jet operates with the tailgate washer jet at the same time. The washer jet assembly contains a valve to prevent washer fluid draining back to the reservoir."

So basically it has a pump that does the front / rear squirters and camera squirter. Then another pump that just does the headlamps if so equipped.

nashvegas:

Thanks for the info and the pages from the manual. You rock! Since I can hear the pump activating, and I get fluid from the front wiper jets I can surmise that there is a possible blockage in the tubing going to the rear. I plan on buying a vacuum pump and applying vacuum to the tubing that connects to the rear wiper blade while someone presses the button to activate the rear washers. Or alternatively, remove the tubing going to the rear wiper/washer from the reservoir and using a low pressure pump to ‘push’ and clear the line of any blockage. What’s your take on that approach? Looking back, I think it might stem from refilling it with tap water, since living in Southern Florida I don’t need to worry about freezing conditions, but it’s possible that over time of non-use some minerals in the water may have built up in the tubing. Last time I’ll do that, since true washer fluid has some glycol based additive which will prevent that from occurring in the future.I’ll try hot water at first and if that doesn’t work, I can try pumping or sucking some alcohol or de-scaler through the tubing to clear it. I’ll post my results when complete.

Yep that sounds like a good approach. Careful about putting too much pressure in the line (ie air compressor nozzle) because it might blow apart otherwise currently-solid connector pieces.

I'd first do a quick check to see if your rear camera washer is working (see above... it's teed off the rear wipe wash line apparently). Because if that's squirting the camera, then it's just the bits of line between the bumper and the rear wiper arm and you could eliminate anything up front or hopefully in headlining (ie its after the "T" off).

Good luck and keep us posted.

Did you ever discover the cause? My 22 rear washer just stopped. All other washers are working, including rear camera nozzle. Just thought I'd ask before I start taking things apart.

When I got my 2020, the rear wiper was plugged. I stuck a needle in the nozzle and all was good. If you can hear the motor running and there isn’t any fluid on the ground, try the needle.

I’ll try that first. Haven’t had the time to get too deep into it, but the simplest solution is usually the best. Could be a little grit clogging that small needle jet. Thx.
