Severe offroad downhill - HDC or Low Range?
Couldn't have said it better myself. I smile whenever I see one because I'm shocked it hasn't rotted away. I think going from FL1 to FL2/LR2 is probably one of the biggest glow-ups/improvements in the auto industry. LR2 was an excellent vehicle.
Appreciate all of these thoughtful and well informed posts.
going forward I will be saving HDC for shorter descents that are technical in nature, and preferring low range for longer ones.
one more item of note: this pass had a series of 5 water crossings at the bottom. On my Range Rover Sport in the past, I made the mistake of going through them with the brakes HOT from this pass ( that one didn’t have low range at all)
i believe that the sudden contact with cold water caused the rotors to warp because shortly thereafter I noticed that the vehicle would shudder when I braked at highway speeds.
beware of your brake temperature, especially when fording water.
this time around I kept it parked for ten minutes or so before the immersion to stay on the safe side!

Love that! When I was learning to drive, my dad had a LR3. I learned how to drive off-road at 14, and on a steep downhill on Bald Mountain in CA he pressed the HDC button and told me to let off the brakes. Scared me but I learned to love HDC. Especially after long days, its nice to give your feet a small rest. Now ofc any time I bring a new person off-road I take them to Hollister Hills SRVA and have them go down the steep up and down hill similar to those at the Land Rover Experiences. Instead of being all nice and friendly, I press the HDC button and aggressively say "off the brakes! Off the brakes!" When they do the HDC shutters the brakes which scare them even more! I do use HDC in the D2, when my ABS works, and regularly use it on the LR3. Has anyone had experience using HDC in a LR3 compared to a new Defender?

Always use low range on steep descents while off road, it will use gearing and engine braking, thats what it was designed for, you can then choose to use HDC or lightly moderate the brakes. I prefer the brakes I have never used HDC, I believe you can use the speed control paddle and set the speed to 1 mph. I have never used it off road but use it on the highway. I think you need to in 4 lo to get to 1 mph or it is limited to a much higher speed on road.
