Starting without a key CAN bus hack.
Here's the intro.
And here are 2 ways you can walk away with a Defender without actually owning one.

I remember when I got my first "new" motorcycle - a 2013 BMW. It had a CANBUS system and I thought it was a real pain because it complicates add-ons, depending on how you wire them (best to just use new runs direct off the battery). In general I thought it was overly complex to have things like headlights part of a sort of vehicle data network. I've worked with computers (and security) my entire life and I'm entirely unsurprised CANBUS is so vulnerable. Mostly I'm shocked it took this long for an exploit to come out.

Reading this almost makes me want to invent my own unhackable, but very simple anti-theft device. Have wondered in the past about just adding a basic, hidden toggle switch that cuts power to the starter, or starter circuit. Could either break the line feeding the starting circuit or using a relay, switch the cable from the battery to the starter with a small rocker switch that could be hidden under the console, dash or seat, perhaps. Only now with CANBUS, I wonder if that would send numerous error codes to the DME or other controller.

Yes, they are simple, effective and they work. And they become a nice self-defense weapon for the crazy road warriors out there. Only con to them is when you are in a hurry and you need to wrangle them off, and the need to carry one more key on an already bulging key ring. And make sure you have a spare hidden in the vehicle in case you lose a key, then you’re really going nowhere fast.
Ha!! That IS effective! My first roommate after college (in the last century) had one of those. Every time he got out of his POS mustang he would lock it up. For the life of me, I could never understand why. It was such a beater, I would have encouraged people to steal it! But, he was from small town Texas and we were in a very sketchy part of Washington, DC area so he was religious about it. Not sure if it is statistically relevant, but it was never stolen....
