It is just software. I've had it done on mine (in the UK) a few months back, works a charm. Was even cheaper than adding it to the original order, which I forgot at the time.

it is just software if your car already had the hardware. The pandemic didn’t cause a software shortage.

The only logical reason for this option to be unavailable on certain vehicles is because some key components are missing due to supply chain constraints.

So the million dollar question is, would this 2023 D90 X-Dynamic SE P400 have the necessary "hardware" needed to enable adaptive cruise? I'm wondering how I would know, or how I can check?

They were going to give me what I wanted for my Defender. Then I found out for some reason it didn't have adaptive cruise. I'm like wth, how does top trim level not have adaptive i.e. it had co-pilot 360, but you need 360+ for that, the plus is the key here, all three on the lot had co-pilot. I then combed the search tool for every badlands in every state around me, none of the delivered vehicles from that spring delivery 'wave' had adaptive cruise. So now I'm half way into a four month wait for a special order Bronco sport with adaptive cruise. It's all chip shortage BS. Like I said only you can decide, some people don't even use cruise much less would they use / need adaptive, for me I use it almost daily and on any longer drive would really miss it.

Man I’m wondering if LR’s adaptive cruise control has improved recently. I have a 2018 RRS and I find the cruise control and lane keep assist to be such a let down. My other car is a Tesla though so… 🤷🏻‍♂️ - and honestly ever since Tesla updated their software to make you take over if you pick up your phone to text I’ve just gone back to driving with my knees for those moments haha. I know I know 🤪

Has it improved for the 2022/3 models?

at the risk of stating the obvious, if it did why wouldn’t LR want to let you add the cost option to activate it?

the common thread during the supply chain constraints was LR prioritizing the most expensive builds when it came to allocating parts.

There’s no harm in Mark etc taking a look and trying to activate it when your vehicle is delivered, but it makes zero sense for LR not to let customers add it if everything necessary to do so is already included.

There are a dozen or more features that are simply software. At no point does LR encourage you to let them "turn on" the features for a certain price. Not the way the car business works. Want more features? They want you to buy a new car.

I think that might be changing. Example BMW in some areas is implementing "Functions on Demand" - subscriptions for capabilities already built into their cars - latest is heated seats for $18 /month

If they allowed this I would option none of these features before I took delivery of the car, then activate it I felt I needed them. If they make you buy it all up front you buy a bunch of stuff you don’t really need lol

JLR themselves don’t let you do it (for the reasons you cite). The post-purchase activations people are talking about here are offered only by certain specialist independents, provided the vehicle itself can support it (i.e. does it require certain hardware, and, if so, is it installed). That’s Low Country’s specific issue. Their car likely doesn’t have the hardware so no one can add the feature. A pre pandemic car likely does, and specialists like markjlr probably can.

'Subscription' services for options (like heated seats) and software-based features that are simply programmed 'off' are both the same thing at the end of the day. How do you get maximum money from the customer?
