Here are portions of the email:…..we also just got a bulletin regarding all X- and V8 trim-level Defenders in the pipeline. Unfortunately, it’s not the best of news.

With the ongoing computer chip supply affecting all sorts of systems, along with a few other parts supply constraints, they have unseated a few hundred Defender builds (and that’s just for the US market) that were scheduled for assembly over the next few months. With yours being a V8, it was one of them.

Apparently the Heads-Up Display and the smoked tail lenses (both standard on your Defender build) are two features that are completely unavailable right now, even for already delivered vehicles that might need repair or replacement due to an accident or something of the like. So with the priority distribution for those parts to go to retailers for repair-supply they won’t be building any with those items for at least the next number of months.

We could hold onto your build and re-submit it once they are able to fulfill this configuration again. Unfortunately they have no ETA for this possibility and it doesn’t sound like they will have any expectation for an ETA for at least the next 3-4 months. Reading between the lines of what they are saying, I wouldn’t expect to see a vehicle configured like yours until at least early next year… maybe longer.

So unfortunately that’s the latest. I somehow hoped the extreme delay rumors were exaggerated but apparently not. To wait or not to wait? That becomes the question.

Well that sux.
I wouldn't be surprised that my build (110-X) might be in that same disposition but my dealer has yet to inform me. Originally 7/7 Last Amendment Date, 8/20 Build Date, 10/29 Delivery - Now the last I saw the order it no longer had a Last Amendment Date or Build Date shown. Just a Delivery date of 10/29 which I am assuming is not going to happen.

Lovely. After getting my first order wrong (I took delivery but put in another order) my dealer is no doubt afraid to communicate that to me.

When my ETA got delayed six weeks I presumed that was the case with my sales rep being that I already suffered a two month delay before that....They should be upfront and communicative...I told my guy that...I said I only get angry when Im left in the dark especially as I need to make plans around getting the vehicle...

I can confirm. I just found out that my Defender X order, which was updated just last week to reflect a build date of June 25th, was never actually built at all and has been cancelled.
Here's what I've found just doing some simple reading... The taillight recall affects all NAS Defenders with smoked taillights built between launch and May 23rd of this year. JLR issued the voluntary recall on May 23rd. My assumption is that they have not produced a Defender X or V8 since that date. Of course, fixing all of these vehicles in the wild will have to take priority over manufacturing of new models.

Here is what my dealer told me, if that means anything (no offense to my dealer as he's probably just as deep in the dark like most of us)...
JLR is experiencing a shortage on HUD's, Black Bonnets, 11'4 displays and now, of course, taillights.
The order will be "slotted in" in October/November with a tentative delivery in November.
Up until Friday, JLR continued to update the system as if the order was still moving through the manufacturing and delivery process (the system was even updated to show that the vehicle had left port about 10 days ago).
The dealer did offer hold to an incoming Defender HSE or XS if I didn't want to wait.

Here's where it gets tricky. Technically, this was a stock order although it was a "sold" stock order with a customer name. So I have no idea if JLR will treat this as a standard dealer order or a customer order. Obviously, if it's a dealer stock order, I would expect it to move down the list. I’m going to give it a week or two to let the dust settle before I decide if I even want to weigh other options. I did request some documentation that the slot for that vehicle will be reserved for my order.

TL/DR. JLR apparently halted production on Defender X and V8's back in late May and apparently went to great lengths to conceal that fact from the dealership. Now, I'm completely in the dark and on the fence about my prospects of getting one this year. Why they would do it this way is beyond me. It’s surely a sad state off affairs for the auto industry right now.

I had an order placed early May and was told the build date was 6/4/21. I've had my delivery date pushed back by only two weeks and I do have a VIN. It has been 'sitting in port' for the last 3/4 weeks. My dealer swears the vehicle was built, I'm skeptical.
Does the VIN mean the vehicle was actually built? I believe its more likely that it wasn't since I can't get a firm delivery date. Could anyone provide some insight?
Thanks

I’m not sure how JLR does it but I’ve read that Ford assigns a vin about two weeks before production. BMW assigns a ViN when they have ordered all of the parts for the vehicle. I don’t know if a manufacturer would stop production once a VIN has been assigned. I think the only issue that could cause JLR to stop production once a VIN has been assigned would be the smoked taillights since they can’t sell the car until it’s resolved anyway.

Unless the car falls under the taillight recall (which only applies to the Defender X and V8), its probably a safe bet that it’s enroute. Otherwise, it probably doesn’t matter even if it was built. Because, at this point, it wouldn’t get delivered anytime soon.
