2022 Landrover Defender. Does my car have walkaway door locking? Saw someone with same car walkaway and car beeped and doors locked. Can’t find on screen how to do it. Help.

 

None of the new defenders currently have approach unlocking and walk away locking activated. Some 22.5 and 23 MY vehicles can have it activated via ccf editing and it will be functional. On the earlier models, it can be set via ccf editing and turned on in the pivi, but it does not work.

 

is there passive locking? if so it could be the reason it beeped and lock or he was hiding his remote and locked it himself.

I wouldn't go by what the dealer says. Its not available to easily turn on in Privi. But it doesn't mean that it cannot be enabled by editing the CCF file.

I absolutely wish i could turn this feature on so, @GrouseK9 PLEASE let us know what you find. I miss this dearly from my X5.

Its not so annoying that it wont lock when walking away. But I too can't find a passive locking feature that will lock it just after a certain amount of time passes. I just get a notification on myp hone saying 'hey u may wanna lock your car'.

My 1997 Honda could and would lock itself after 30 seconds of leaving the car if you don't do it yourself. Its just weird to me that something as basic as that is not an easy option to turn on.

 

It's a security risk and most modern European cars don't support it. The farther away the signal from the key fob is from the car, the higher possibility of it being intercepted and stored for later use. That's why most modern vehicles require you touch the handle to unlock or lock the car (ensuring you are close to the car).

Interception of communications between key fob and vehicle is easy, straightforward and common and has led to a large increase in car thefts in Europe (and probably the rest of the world). I keep my key fob in a faraday pouch when it's in the house. I would imagine insurance companies and security pros have encouraged this evolution in functionality.

It's something I got used to in a week or so.

 

Walkaway locking and approach unlock are available by using the Gap tool. Some say it's '23 and newer but there are at least 2 who say they did it on their '22's.

Mine is on order and I'll let you know how it goes with my '22.

 

I do get that, but there are a number of things this Defender does not have that are supposedly security risks. I don't see why it can't be left as an option that can be turned on and off via Privi and the user's preference/acceptance of risk with a disclaimer if needed. Another great example is no remote start from the key fob. And I get again there are European regulations, but my BMW X5 had remote start from the key fob, just press lock 3 times and it fired right up. It wasn't on by default, needed to be turned on in the infotainment. Though built in the US, it is also obviously a global vehicle sold throughout Europe.

To me its just laziness. The functionality is there. Just leave it as optional and let the user decide the level of risk they are willing to accept.

 

for the OEM it is still high risk and despite what people say they will accept, as soon as they have their car stolen they will bad mouth the OEM, not all but enough, so I understand why OEMs do not allow their customers to make bad decisions. my wife's X5 does this and I personally don't see it as a particularly valuable features vs pressing the button on the door handle.
