Default Wrong fluid in the rear eDiff - what happens?

You need not worry if (when?) someone puts the incorrect fluid in the rear eDiff. You will know within 24 hours.

Somewhere between 1 and 10 MPH (and never faster) you will feel a driveline shudder -- anywhere from a short skipping sound / vibration under your U.S. driver's seat, at the right front (in a right turn), or at the rear; UP to a single, strong clunk (is the back end dropping out?) at the rear end. When the shudder is in the rear, you might think the auto parking brake is getting hung up.

This will go on regularly (but not always) until you flush out the rear eDiff twice with the correct fluid.

I give credit to the shop supervisor at my local dealer for claiming the mistake his team made and fixing it right away.

Enjoy !!

i mean, that sounds like they put water instead of any kind of lubricant. That's nuts.

Glad they owned up to it, and took care of it. hopefully no permanent damage since wasn't at high speed.

How many miles do you have to require a change of fluids?

45K miles. A marked amount of that time towing and off-road.

I changed the front diff, rear diff., transfer case and transmission fluid and filter all at the same time. I originally thought I might bite off one or two at at time, but access to shop appointments precluded that approach.

Most likely the tech put non-eDiff fluid in the rear ediff. -- the same one he puts in vehicles without the eDiff. Just goes to show how different is the eDiff design from the normal one.

Enjoy !

Can you please list the fluids used for this undertaking and maybe sticky to prevent the same thing happening again?

I had this same issue on my 2014 RRS V8 Dynamic SC's rear diff. Land Rover San Francisco put the wrong fluid in it. Judder judder shudder shudder on the way home from the dealership in the city. Turned right around, after some futzing and telling me I needed a new differential -- they drained and refilled, problem fixed.

The reason I mention this is -- LR is at least 10-15 years into using diff fluid / diff fluid part numbers for the rear locking e diffs so they should be well aware of this. It's not just on the new Defender.
