Default MAR (Mid Atlantic Rally)

It's that time of year again. ROAV (Rover Owners Association of Virginia) is hosting MAR again. A fantastic event for all ages of Rover owners. This will be my second year going. I heard last year that MAR actually Stands for Mud and Rain, from the weather forecasts it looks like I will find that out for sure this year.

Truck is all packed and I am ready to hit the road tomorrow early afternoon for the 5.5 hour drive to the campsite. Hope to see a bunch of you out there. I think i still have a few Landroverforums.com stickers if anyone wants one.

Here are the details from the ROAV Website https://www.roav.org/mar-2015

2018 Mid-Atlantic Rally (MAR): Wheatland Farm, Giles County Virginia

Mid-Atlantic Rally 2018

Dates: October 4 - 7, 2018

Location: 100 Hoges Orchard Ln, Pembroke, VA 24136 (37°18'50.8"N 80°35'07.8"W)

REGISTRATION:

Registration is open! Go to the ROAV Web Store to purchase your tickets, now. Early Bird registration lasts through Sep 14. This includes the reduced price of $99 and includes a free t-shirt. Registrations after Sep 14 will cost $120 and will not include a free t-shirt. New for 2018 - all registrants will receive a free ROAV leather fob key chain.

Participants within the same family membership can bring an extra vehicle for the cost of $25.

Please make sure you read "The Rules" before registering.

TRAILS:

There will be trails available for all skill levels.

  • Beginner / Stock Trucks (over 8 miles of fire roads)
  • Intermediate / Modified Trucks
  • Intermediate to Advanced / Modified Trucks
  • Remember – TREAD LIGHTLY

All trail rides will be guided. (We are seeking volunteers to be guides!)

We are pleased to announce that the property manager will allow us to travel through the lower fields across the street from the rally camp area to gain improved access to the trails. This negates the need to drive the 7 miles to the top of the mountain and enter there like we did in years past. The lower fields will be stocked with cows and as a condition of this access, we must have guides escort trucks. Please remain with the group guides and be respectful of the property owner and his livestock to ensure that we are able to hold future events here.

Finally, ROAV is not responsible for the safety or vehicle recovery of any attendee that sneaks off without a guide and finds themselves all alone and in a tough spot.

EVENTS:

This year we hope to expand slightly on the events. We will continue to host the Rovers North spoored RTV course. We will also add to this a Blind Race. The Blind Race consists of a blindfolded driver and a seeing-eye navigator. The navigator must communicate with the driver and get them to negotiate through an obstacle course. Points for speed and accuracy. This event will take place roughly the same time as the RTV to allow you to take part while waiting for your turn at the RTV.

Keep an eye on our event schedule page to see updates as we get confirmation from our sponsors.

CAMPING/LODGING:

Primitive camping is available onsite. Tents, campers, and trailers are all allowed. The short road in to the rally area may not be friendly to oversized rigs (large RV’s or 5th wheel trailers) but standard sized campers and trailers should have no problem. Flat ground is at a premium, so please plan ahead and bring plenty of leveling blocks.

There are no electricity or plumbing facilities. Port-a-Loos will be provided.

There is access to a hose bib that is attached to a natural spring. This was used in the past to supply drinking water for livestock. The water source has not been tested by health authorities but locals drink the water – and so does Bob Steele – if that is any measure of suitability.

Generators are allowed. Rally participants should remember to be courteous with generators and mindful of the noise. We ask that all generators be shut down by 11:00pm.

Hotel accommodations can be found nearby at Mountain Lake Hotel or at any of the various hotels in Blacksburg, VA. Rally participants are on their own if they wish to secure a hotel room and these costs are not included in the cost of registration. There is a VA TECH home football game this year against Notre Dame. This is shaping up to be a big weekend for the college so hotel options may not be available and you are encouraged to book early.

CAMPSITE THEME CONTEST:
TBD

MEALS:

Mission BBQ will be on site providing meals for Saturday evening. The cost of meals is $15 per person. Please pre-purchase meal tickets as there will only be a limited amount of on-site ticket sales for meals.

Below is a sample menu;

  • Pulled pork BBQ (4 types of sauces on the side) w/ buns

  • Coleslaw

  • Corn

  • Fresh baked brownies

T-SHIRTS:

Early Bird registration gets one short sleeve t-shirt include with your registration. Extra t-shirts are available for purchase for $20. Please note that after September 14, t-shirts quantities will be limited and we may not have a large availability in all sizes for sale at the event.

FIRES:

Campfires are allowed at each campsite pending current weather and fire conditions. Please be safe with fires, keep a water source handy, and do not leave fires unattended. Check in with Rally Control to stay informed on current fire conditions.

Looks like you're getting the same type of weather, liquid. Nothing serious, just constant drizzle or overcast. Looking forward to seeing more pictures, safe travels to you.

Ok so for the write up on the weekend.

MAR is a great event. The views from the camping area are fantastic. It seems like every year there is a fog hanging on the distant mountain tops. There was about 125 Rovers there, with tons of families enjoying the weekend. Land Rover USA sent out one of their adventure drivers Chris in a new Range Rover Sport. The truck was sweet and he was awesome. He taught about driving and recovery techniques on the trail and would even let you get some wheel time in the Sport.

The effort that ROAV puts into the trail system was evident at every turn. Everything is well kept and laid out by difficulty levels from mild to wild. Some damage did happen (some time in the trip I had a caliper go bad) to a few trucks but Lucky8 brought a trailer full of parts and came through to get folks back on the trail or home. Great trails with excellent views of the countryside made for a good day in the woods. I tried to take pics but driving and taking pics is not my strong suite.

Jonsey unveiled his custom built light weight 100" coiler v8 a very cool build done by the guys at Sarek Autowerks. So many great trucks even the new ones, like the RRS supercharged, Disco Sport and Discovery 5 out on the trails was awesome. They really are able to wheel, so for those that are worried that off road is dead with the current crop of Land Rover we were wrong when the LR3 came out and I think we are wrong again if we think they aren't capable.

I would highly recommend coming out and enjoying the raffle of all the great prizes donated by the sponsors, trying the trials course, the awesome food or just a beer around the fire with fellow mental Land Rover Owners.
