You can order it with a wire-mesh deck, which is welded and coated along with the rack. You can even specify just the rear part or to include the sunroof portion. I almost did this but I saw a couple options I liked better. One is to get some sorta farm-mat matterial. Its black, can be cut and secured as needed. Looks nice and popular for racks. Also fairly cheap (have it bookmarked some place). The other option is to deck it. Someone did a stunning wood deck with a stain and coating. Lets them afix things in all sorts of ways. I may do this since I have access to a shop and we do epoxy work. So I would sand it up nice, stain it black then coat in a UV resistant polyspartic epoxy.

 

That sounds like a great plan and the idea of decking it to your specs will make for a very special look. Since you have the ability to epoxy it that sounds like a great alternative.
