New Life for '98 Discovery 1 "Project Pig"
So here I am, starting to renew my Father-n-law's '98 Land Rover Discovery 1.
I figured that I might as well start a build thread to have a place for all of my progress/modifications/fixin and questions.
When I got the D1 , it had been sitting for some time with a tarp over it to keep the sunroofs/windows/windshield from leaking.
Its relatively clean with just under 100k miles on the clock.
Hopefully all it needs is a little TLC and someone to get her going again and use it for what it really is.
Here she is as it sits now:

Since I have had it now, I have encountered the famous death wobble, loss of power steering (located problem to be the hose from reservoir) and a high idle.
I have started a "things to do list" with some of the basics:
Change the oil and filter
Change spark plugs and wires
Clean MAF / IACV / and throttle body
replace the power steering reservoir hose
locate leaks and repair
recover the headliner
locate some good rubber to roll on until I figure out want I am going to do with the suspension
Things that have been done recently:
new water pump
new power steering pump

A couple o thoughts, one go look at my major service list posted in the D1 section under sticky, this will give you some additional direction. Also, PM me some time with your number and lets talk about lots of things you will want to also look at.
Curious, have you done much wheeling in the past, will you be with this truck?

Thanks Mike. Yes, I have review the list. I have been creeping around this board for some time now. Trying to gather as much info as I can.
As for my purpose, I want to get the truck dependable for my Father-n-Law. Not to say I wouldnt be able to use it for as a Family Camping , Hunting and Fishing Trips
I havent done much "real off roading", never really had a vehicle to do it. Who knows, after I get this things where she needs to be, maybe I will start looking for some trails.

Ignition Tumbler Issues
One thing thats been buggin me is my ignition tumbler.
I have searched and searched, and still havent come across a fix yet.
I have now at least figured out something consistent about it.
I havent had any issues with turning the key to the different positions, but lately, my key will not come out of the tumbler. Its acting like its stuck and something is keeping it in there. Also, when the key is "stuck" my steering lock DOES NOT work.
Apparently , while the key is in the tumbler, it must be putting a drain on the battery, some how. Jumped in to roll the windows down, and the the battery was dead. Then the key just came out without any effort and the steering wheel was locked. I didnt think anything of it and just wrote it off as lucky.
Charged the battery back up, go back to roll windows down to work on truck. Put the key in, turn to the acc position, and turn off. Key is stuck again and steering wheel is free to move. Again, didnt think much of it.
Couple days when past, went to mess with the key again, battery was dead and steering wheel lock engaged. Key came right out.
Shiftonthefly1 Said to check this out:
"Try unplugging the lock solenoid. There is a two wire connector basically under the cluster. I believe the wires are brown and white or orange and white. You need to remove the plastic colum trim. The plug connects towards you as you face the steering wheel."
Does this still seem like my fix for this issue?

Oh well.
Is there some wire holders out there that you guys have used before with good results? Until then, I will be doing the zip-tie trick.
