Default Buying a Defender

Hello,

Name is Hassan, I live in Lebanon. I have sparked a sudden interest for the Defender in particular. I used to drive a Renualt Megane F1, but after my crash, i decided i want somthing slower (no offence). I've always loved the Defender, and the idea of owning one. I have already spotted 3 in Beirut, 2 of which are for sale. Unfortunatly I have the slightest qlue to the Defenders specs and years, model types and variations. Im very new to the 4x4 world. So how do I identify each Defender by type and model. and what do i look out for? which is best, v8, v6 or i4? why?
please give me a briefe but effective guide on how to buy a defender, and not the 07' but the older generation. and how much do they run for, give or take.

Thanks in advance. il snap pics of the ones i saw, maybe that will help me learn.

hi, i am a girl so take my advice with grain of salt, but if shopping for used defender (so you will give up the advances in 2007 model) i would look only at technical state then anything else. Very well cared for Defender (not sure it was already named so) from year 1980 is way better then bad repaired crashed or badly abused in off road from 2004.
I have seen in last days many people happy with their old defenders so find your self one in good condition, reserve some moneys for basic maintenance before you start driving it, some little renewal if needed.

About engine, that is hard to help, diesels are very economic, but you might not care for fuel prices in your region. We do a lot here, and i cannot justify car eating 20l/100km even if new would be offered with petrol engines at all.

To short it up, try to find TD5 (before 2007) in as best as possible condition and spend some moneys on making it car "you know and trust".

thnx for the advice...
-newer models are out of budget
-desiels arent aloud to roam around here, so no TD5
-Gas is very expensive here too, so that sucks

otherwise, im still looking around for a Decent Defender, these things are hard to find.
thnx for everything, il update u when i have an update

So you can't have a diesel? All Defenders after 1988 were diesel

You would be looking at "classic" Series petrol Land Rovers or a Defender V8
