Default Gearbox Oil Level

Hi there, hope you can help me with something.

Recently taken delivery of a fantastic 20 year old 90 2.5 diesel with the 5-speed box. Have been enthusiastically checking various fluid levels, but came across a strange one when I checked the gearbox oil level. Was on level ground and opened up the oil level bolt on the side of the gearbox (the tapered one?) and a bucket load of gear oil freely flowed down my arm. Now, the question is have I been a complete spanner and opened the wrong hole? I could see what seemed to obviously be the drain plug way below it. The oil was warm from a run maybe an hour before but I didn't think it expanded that much? And if it had been overfilled how the heck did they do it without tipping the car on its side?? And as an exmaple of how much this Landy has been looked after, I put 2 litres of 90 into the rear diff before it reached the correct fill level.. and I think it only holds 2.3!

I have decided the leave the Landy where it is at the moment, just in case I have done something wrong... any advice would be gratefully received! Also am I right in thinking the gearbox uses Automatic Transmission Fluid a la Dexron II if I do need to top up?

Thanks again!

Default RE: Gearbox Oil Level

In some US built transmission/tcase combinations there was a common seal between them and if the seal failed, fluid would move back and forth or build up an excess in one side. This might be what is happening with yours, just a guess of course.
