spare wheel carriers?
Hello, I own an '89 110 Hardtop. I use it for work & currently I have the spare tied off in the back. Sometimes I need the space.. I'm after practical opinions on rear door spare wheel mountings. Is the direct mount for the spare a real stress on the hinges- Is a swingaway carrier the way to forward? Advice & opinions welcome. Thanks, Steve.
Rear door is fine for standard wheels and normal road use - stick it in the back while off road. 32inch diameter mud terrains weigh close to twice that of a normal tyre, even for road use it's a strain on the hinges. Swing away carriers bolt to the tub and cross member and are a wise investment.

I'm new to this forum but here is my tuppence worth:
Just fitted the new version of the Mantec wheel carrier to my 110 TD5 station wagon. The lower mount is in the rear chassis cross member not the bottom of the tub so should be stronger.
The carrier doesn't swing away independently of the door but moves with it and takes all the weight of the wheel.
The new design should clear any light protectors / grills but will probably prevent fittinh of bumperettes.
Seems like pretty good quality.
No Hi Lift brackets.
Instructions a bit suspect but managed to work out installation OK. Only need to drill two holes on late TD5.

Vehicle is a Defender, and the item is Britpart DA2215. It has 2 plates, bolted together, I assume one goes inside and one outside. It has 3 fixed arms for holding the wheel, and one bolted arm which runs through the assembly. The rear door of my Defender has a plate which looks like its designed to take the carrier.
Looked everywhere for answers, no one seems to know.. or answer. Its a common product so I am guessing its straightforward.
