Default thermostat and fuel gauge

Hello chaps just bought a defender (1988) which has had a 200tdi engine fitted ,
i have no reading on the temp or fuel gauge ...How should i test the instruments and eventually fix them ...thanks Mac

First you need to make sure they are even hooked up, then you will need to trouble shoot from there.
Check the easy stuff first, is the temp gauge plugged in on the engine?
I am betting it came with a petrol engine and when they did the diesel swap they didnt hook everything back up or the ECU is not reading the inputs from the sensors.

Im pretty sure they have a 5v generator behind the cluster somewhere, when this goes bad your gauges die
