steering wheel restoration
So I'm sure other people have the same problem with their steering wheel looking old and rough. My disco is an 01 and other than my shifter boots the steering wheel is the next to last interior flaw that I need to fix. Does anyone know a way to bring the steering wheel back to life without having to replace it?
I found that mine looked really faded but turned out to just be really gunked up. I got some mild dish soap and warm water with a soft cloth towel and cleaned the heck out of it. Just be careful not to rip the material around the top and bottom. Any stitching that frays up i just took a lighter to it and burned the tips. Then I wiped the plastic with Armor All cleaning wipes and finished it of with leather conditioner. Looks like new!
Replacing it isn't always too pricey. Will Tillery posts "museum quality" parts on occasion over on discoweb.

i'm sure it's crumbling just like mine. and now my d1 is doing the same.
i'm going to try and rubber bicycle wrap it. sounds ghetto but i think it can be done.
i'm done buying parts that will just fail like the original.

Some have had good results just cutting the leather off. In other markets where lower trim level discovery were sold, the wheel was not leather wrapped. There is a texture molded into the wheel. So unless the rubber wheel has come separated that might be an option.
Go to a specialty leather shop and get a leather dye spray. The key is getting the right color to match the interior. I have a black leather interior. Black is easier to match. Used acetone to clean up the leather. Then spray the black dye to cover up th scuff and wear marks on the seats and steering wheel.
they're way beyond "treatments" and I don't think there are any real fixes other than replace or repair.
D1 has just started to begin to crumble in high use spots.
D2 Did the same but tore away to reveal a black rubber lining.
In my opinion, other than falling into one, a bicycle type of wrap would work best in cost effective/look ok. I experimented with actual sliced innertube and am trying to figure out the best way to finish it.
