You need a new fuel pump and fuel filter.

Sorry for the delay I've been out of town and working or a while. I got a fuel pressure meter and just took some readings from the rail while trying to start, it's getting 40psi at the rail and holding it. Funny thing it started too fire and stumble when I cranked it the first time. It hadn't done that since it stopped running. So do you figure it's not getting proper ignition then flooding? Still confused but appreciate the help. I ordered a new set of plugs and am looking for the best deal on a good set of wires.... figure that couldn't hurt regardless of what the rover's issue is.

Get the Magnecor plug wires from www.apexperformance.net

Its not the fuel pum p if you have 40psi at the fuel rail.

yeah... that's what I figured. What do you think I should start looking at next? timing, compression, all of the above? I've got the next couple days off, figured i'd be replacing a fuel pump but it seems to run well.

Start with timing and checking for spark.
Try and start it, then remove a spark plug, does it smell of raw fuel?
Does that plug spark?

I've checked some of those already. When I started the thread I thought I wasn't getting because I pulled a plug wire and just held it close to the plug and didn't see any arc. Every car I've had in the past would arc when pulled and held slightly away like that, but I guess this was different. A friend came over and stuck a screw diver in the end of the plug cable and set it on a ground, it sparked. Maybe it's not strong enough? I did replace the coil so that brand new.

You can smell fuel and see dampness when the plugs are removed. The system is holding the fuel pressure very well also. Is there a good way to check for timing? I believe A&H said earlier to find TDC and see where the rotor is pointing. Also how do you adjust the timing if that is the case?

Remove a spark plug, reattach the plug wire to the plug.
Crank the engine and see how strong the spark is.

Weak spark will cause hard starting, over fueling sill cause flooding, bad timing will cause a hard to start/no start.

I do not know how to check/adjust the timing on a Rover.

Here are some test you will have to do to avoid guessing. We like guessing do we?I would concentrate around distributor.
