Question 1996 discovery - did not pass smog :(

Hi to all Again and Happy New Year!

I took my 1996 discovery to have it smog, and to my surprise it failed

I was told it read high emission Co, almost 9%, can some explain to me, what does this mean, and how can I fix it?

Wisdom help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Is the check engine light on?
If not I would suspect the catalytic converters are bad.
You can have them replaced with universal ones at any muffler shop.
They will take out your old ones and weld in new ones.
Expect to pay around $100 each for parts and labor, you have two of them, one for each side of the engine.
If you look under the middle of the truck you will see a pipe coming from the engine in the shape of a "Y", on it you will see to big round things.
Those are your "cat's."

Here is what the "Y" pipe looks like with the cats.

Before you wonder off to a muffler shop, what about your engine, when was it last tuned along with new plug wires, what octane gas are you burning?

Hi Mike,

The last tune up was done on early November 10. Including new wire on the plugs. Regarding gas, I'm using 89 Octane, once now and then I'll fill up with the highest.

I friend of mine who know a little Mechanic came in today and had a quick glance, he mention that the accelerator valve is not working properly, that it should be replaced.

Can this be correct?

I called several muffler shops, and the cheapest quote is of $230.00, including parts and labors. Does it sound right?

Another question, I am cash tied at the moment, If I was to sold my Discovery without fixing the above issues, how much could I ask for it?? Other than the above it's been working great. Cosmetic wise it's in fair condition, inside/out.

Thanks,

Yvonne67

$230 for both cats is a fair price.
If you sell it just let the buyer know what it needs and if they offer you less and you are ok with that then take it.

www.edmunds.com
www.nada.com
Use those sites to determine the value of your truck.
As far as the "accelerator valve" not working, I have no idea what that is.
Did he say it was the throttle body not working correctly?
If you friend is a mechanic and has a welder he can replace the cats for you, you buy them and he welds them in for the price of a pizza and beer.
Your throttle body can be cleaned.

I am going to assume he means the throttle body.
If you look in the tech section you will see how to clean it.
Have him do that.
Do not replace it, just clean it.

I would suggest you hold off on replacing your cats, since you don't have a fault code and it has not yet been proven that they are bad.
You need to find a good shop that can diagnois this problem using a scope and an exhaust analizer.
Let us know what they find.
