Default 1996 Discovery - Fault Codes: P1179 P1316 P1177 P0300 P0308

Hello again! I have another one, guys. I think I have some ideas, but I need a sounding board.

Ok, so I plugged in my Blue Tooth OBD2 reader and started reading codes with Torque. Here is what I got.

P1179
P1316
P1177
P0300
P0308

Which according to GEMS read:

AMFR correction at its maximum negative value
Misfire causing excess emissions (NAS only)
FMFR correction at its maximum negative value
Misfire on multiple cylinders (NAS only)
Misfire on cylinder 8 (NAS only)

The first thing I tried to tackle was the misfire.

I popped Cyl 8's spark plug and noticed that there was some carbon scoring. I looked at the spark plug wire to see if there was obvious damage, there is not. My next step is to replace all plugs and wires and see if the misfire resolves.

Another thing my Torque application seemed to indicate was that the left bank o2 sensors were both really slow. the AMFR and FMFR codes seem to indicate that the O2 sensors just aren't doing their jobs. However, I wonder if that too can be resolved through new plugs.

I appreciate any help.

95% of the time O2 codes are solved with a tune up.
So replace the plugs and wires, clear the codes and see what comes back.

Yes, I figured as much, Spike. I just wanted to hear someone else say it.

God, there is a lot to do on this beast.

A few questions:

Have you cleaned the MAF? IACV? Throttle Body?

I fought all those for a long time until I did that.

If the cleaning and plug/wire replacement does not solve it, monitor your O2 performance, cause they would be next. I wish I had done all that right off the Bat!

I did get come CRC cleaner and blew the hell out of the MAF. I did not do the Control Valve or the TB just yet, though that probably should be done. I also plan to replace the air filter with a performance filter in the next week or two.

As far as O2 sensor monitoring, I am already checking that daily. With the misfires though, it is throwing the numbers, I think. So I am going to do plugs and wires first (next few days probably). Will update when that's done.

Just so you can make a informed decision, a new MAF for your truck is $1700, a "performance" oiled air filter will actually dirty the MAF and possibly ruin it.
It will not get you any more power anyway, so I'd double think that one.

I believe you have cause and effect confused. The o2's are ther primary input to ECM for fuel data,the MAF is primary for air data. Misfires are due to those inputs being screwy. Not other way around.

You will continue having problems until o2's are taken care of and you clean all the ports on the plenum. See recent threads on really cleaning these ports.
