Default 1997 Discovery I

I had my car stolen about 2 years ago and found a great looking 1997 Discovery to replace it I but it had some issues. I bought it and in the last year have spent some money getting the head gasket replaced, new steering pump put in amongst some other things. I am now ready to try and tackle the other issues I am dealing with myself and hoping I could get pointed in the right direction.

- The ABS light stays on most the time but occasionally the pedal will go to the floor and shutter badly almost not wanting to stop.
- The check engine light comes back on after reset. The O2 sensors have been replaced as well as a ignition coil and now I am told it is the passenger side catalytic converter. Are they very expensive and any suggestions of where to get a quality one without going broke?
- The steering box has been replaced and now the steering feels "Loose" I have to constantly move steering wheel back and forth while driving to keep it straight.
- Driving on the highway when I hit an over pass, occasionally I get a "Wobble" in the steering wheel. There has to be more to the problem than just the steering box replacement.

My children love this vehicle and I do not want to sell it and get a different ride. But any help in steering me in the right direction on these issues would be greatly appreciated. "Steering" no pun intended.

Many Thanks, David

ABS - some owners unplug the fuse, as they feel the failure of the ABS in this model (no brakes) outweights the slip and slide braking recovery.

Have codes read from the test port, for free at many parts stores. Write down the numbers, not the description, and post back.

Search "Death Wobble" for the steering and shaking issue. It is not the damper, more likely tie rod ends. Can be way too exciting on a sharp expressway exit ramp.....

But not as exciting as seeing the Falcons take the field in the dome!

There is a way to read the ABS codes without a specialized reader. Try searching on ABS blink test. You jumper the OBD connector and the ABS light will blink out a code. I fixed my ABS this way. I had a bad rear wheel sensor. Got a new pair off FleaBay - they come in pairs - for pretty cheap, and problem gone.

When I replaced my steering box the steering became loose as well. I found it just needed the backlash adjusted. There is a section in the RAVE that instructs how to do this. In principal it's very simple. Just don't over-tighten it.
