Thinking about replacing my catalytic converter. The whole "Y" pipe. Is this a job for a D.I.Y. ? When replacing CAT is it necessary to replace all O2 sensors?

 

Are you building a new y-pipe or buying a bolt-in pipe? The bolt-in is DIY if you can deal with rusted bolts that might break off. Bending and welding new pipes to a stamped y is not really DIY if you have to ask, but not difficult for any exhaust shop with a tubing bender and MIG welder.

 

Save the cats and sell them to a recycler. I got $85 each for mine.

 

I'm buying the whole "Y" piece ready fit and to be installed.

 

Nice, That would cover half the cost for my new cat.

 

You may have to insist on getting them back. By law they have to give you your old parts back, I think.

 

Where do you live?
Do they do inspections?
if not you can delete the cats, sell your old ones and almost pay for the new y-pipe.
And no, you do not need to replace all the O2's when you replace your y-pipe, it would be a good time to replace the fronts though.

If I don't have emissions can I take off the cats and O2 sensors? I have a 1995 D1 OBD1 system. Like on mine I only have 2 O2 sensors so it wouldn't really mess with the ECU or anything would it? I think someone answered this before but I can't find it. I'm about to cut off my pipes from the manifold and take it to the shop to get a new system installed. (It has a hole in the muffler and the pipes are rusty) I got quoted between $300-400 for a glasspack system. I don't want anything obnoxious and I heard the glasspack on youtube and it sounds pretty good. A little deeper sounding but not all out ROAR!

 

Yes you can cut out the cats, but you must keep the O2's.
You do not want a glasspack system, it will be obnoxious loud and drone on the highway and you probably wont be able to talk to your passengers.
