Default 1998 discovery won't start

1998 Discovery (150,000+ miles)has been sitting in my drive way for about 8 months. recently I replaced rebuilt alternator, new starter, new interstatebattery (700 cca mfg date of Jan/2009 &installedin monday, Jan 19,2009), and new fuel pump. when i turn the ignition key, starter click for a half second & click again about 3 seconds later in repeated cycle. maybe computer or security alarm problem? i will check solenoid this weekend todetermine defective or not. any help is appreciated. thank you.

New battery sounds good but can you describe the following:
[ul][*]For how long has the new battery been connected in the D1. If over two weeks then;[*]Is the battery holding sufficient charge, you can have it tested.[*]Not sure where you are located with respect to outside temperatures. Low temp requires higher CCA.[*]Are your terminals and cables eroded.[*]Do you have any parasitic drain from the battery. (aftermarket stuff) hooked to the terminals.
[/ul]Always start with the simple things first.

If your problem was the alarm the starter wouldn't even click like you're describing. The immobilizer will not allow power to the starter. You can try 3 lock/unlock cycles to cycle the alarm and possibly clear any problem if it is being caused by the alarm but I don't think it will help.

Climb under the truck and tap on the starter with a hammer to see if it is just stuck. I think your solenoid is the most likely problem.

He replaced the starter though.
Reset the alarm and then see what happens.

Apparently thought about it so long I forgot what I was thinking about. It is definitely not out of the realm of possibility to have replaced a bad starter with a bad starter. I had a dealer install a new starter on a truck for me and a week later the thing literally came apart. The housing that protects the bendix gear actually separated from the motor itself.

I haven't looked at my starter yet so I'm not sure if the solenoid is on the starter or not. It's really sounding like either the starter or solenoid is bad. Could also be an intermittent ignition switch that is only sending short bursts of power to the starter circuit. No idea how you would go about checking that though.

Had a bad cell in a battery, mistook it for a bad starter and bought a NEW starter amd a new battery, starter lasted 700 miles and would only click. Crawled under with test light and confirmed that I WAS getting power to the solinoid when in start position replaced starter, no more problem
