Default 1999 Discovery I SD Reverse Gear Problem

Hi All,

Sometimes when I put my truck in reverse it doesn't "catch". I have to put it in a different gear and listen for it to "catch" and then put it back into the reverse gear and then it catches.

Any thoughts on what the problem could be? Thanks!

Maybe your shift cable needs some adjustment?

Thanks! but what does this part mean: "engine idle trans in neutral"? My fluid level is good for the transmission, it used to leak really bad but for some reason it doesn't leak anymore. A guy at Autozone overfilled it a little but ever since he did that it doesn't leak anymore about 9 months now..

Should I be relieved or worried? LOL..

Oh Man, that's a great thought, my brother mentioned something like that, too, that it sounds like something is slipping or loose..

I will check it out..

check fluid level with engine running, transmission in neutral

overfilling can cause issues just like running low can

Every once in a blue moon I'll get in the truck to start it, turn the key, and get absolutely nothing. I'll jiggle the gear selector and it will fire right up. My situation is slightly different but my point is sometimes things can get a little sloppy and just being a 1/16th inch off can cause a prob.

Like not letting you turn the ignition all the way off and get your key out? ... lol

eventually ya learn the right way to jiggle the key ..to get it out. Then it becomes second nature till someone else gets in to drive it and can't figure it out..

OK, I will check it out. My dipstick has 2 holes on it. So does one indicate low and one indicate full or how does it work?
