3.9 have a problem smoking
hey everyone brought 1996 discovery 1 3.9 petrol & gas recently it just started to smoking and I been trying to figure it out why it doing it. it been serviced just recently and had all new hoses
Well, that would depend on the color of smoke., these are for what comes out tail pipe, after truck warmed up:
White - coolant being flashed to steam by leaky head gaskets - will have coolant loss, check daily when cold against some mark or seam in the overflow jug (if you have a black coolant container upgrade to white/cream ones, the black ones split and drop all the coolant). MAy have gurgle sounds under dash if heat is turned on (bubbles in coolant).
Blue - more so on acceleration from a stop light - valve seals
Blue - just about all the time - rings (compression test will reveal, do tests dry, then add a teaspoon of oil to the cylinder and repeat. Numbers that come way back up indicate rings)
Black - running rich
Electrical wires overheating can make smoke and distinctive smell.
