4X4 Question
Just purchased my 1994 Discovery, trying to learn as much as I can.
Now, with my transfer case shift ****, I only have two positions. To the right, and to the left. No up, no down, no back, no forward. Is this normal? Seems I should have an option to choose between 4 wheel high and 4 wheel low.

when i got mine, the shifter was very stiff i had to work it alot. from your discription, are you stuck in neutral? cause on my 94 i have to have it to the bottom right for normal driving. wish i could help more.
It's not stuck in neutral. With the **** to the right it drives in in 2x4. When I switch it to the left, I'm pretty sure I hear the differential lock engaging. The dash indicator light comes on when it's to the left. Haven't had a chance to be sure it engages. I have tried to lightly force it up and down, but don't wanna force it too hard.
I don't recall if the D1 had a shift interlock or not, but try shifting while in neutral. You might be dealing with either a seized linkage, or a seized interlock.

The 3rd diff in the transfer allows the 70% rear and 30% front torque distribution under normal driving conditions. That is with shift lever to the right and down.
With selector pushed upwards you will engage Low range but still 70/30 only more torque.
When the lever is pushed on the neutral line towards the left the 3rd diff will engage (Lock) Then the torque distribution is 50/50 front an rear.
Your dash indicator will show the orange 2 diffs and 4 wheels.
With the lever in this position down it is locked in high range 4x4(50/50)
With lever upwards you should have engaged 4x4 low range and not to exceed 40 km/ph in this selection.
To solve your mystery lift the center console and see if all the links is there.
It might be stuck or bended.

Hey thanks guys. Was able to find some articles on this topic and it does sound like I need to remove the console and have a look. I have a feeling that I am stuck in Low range. Is my best case scenario that the linkage is stuck and I can just "unstuck" it?
Ok so I took it apart. Everything in the shifter housing moves freely. It seems the rod that moves the transfer case between hi and low is stuck. Also Now the dash indicator light won't go off, so is it stuck in 4x4? What do I do now? Please help
Lube the hell out of the linkage and wiggle it until it starts to free up.
If you start with carb cleaner it will dissolve some of the corrosion, then use something like PB Blaster.
As already mentioned it is a full time 4x4, so with the t-case level back and to the right it is in 4x4 hi.
With the level back and to the left 4x4 hi with the t-case locked, meaning both driveshafts are physically locked together so they both get equal power no matter what.
And then forward of those two positions is lo range, locked or unlocked.
If its in lo your top speed will be about 35mph.

Update: I removed the solenoid and got everything to move. WooHoo! Was a PIA but it feels good. Gotta get everything put back together now.
