Default '96 DI - No power to fuel pump.....

Originally I thought it was the pump that was going, but after resetting the inertia switch, it fired right up, drove it 12 miles and it wouldn't restart after getting it home.

I pull off the plug for the fuel pump assembly and I see this....

Any ideas fellas? It appears the the black wire leading into the back of the plug is the burned one.....

I would have to say that you need a new wire harness.
Follow it back and there should be a pig tail and you can unhook that bad harness and get a new one.
If you shop for fuel pumps on Rovers North you will see they sell a new wire harness for your truck.

The odd thing is Spike, I'm still getting 12v power through that harness! I'm certain the pump isn't bad, but would the bad harness be the most likely culprit for intermittent starts?

I will kinda answer your question with what happened to me...
The left rear turn signal in my bumper would work sometimes and sometimes not.
Pull it out and wiggle the bulb and it would work, put it back in the bumper and it would not work.
Bought new bulb holder, worked great for 6 months or so.
Bought yet another bulb holder...3 months. (I have saved all of these so I'm stocked up on them lol)
Wiggle bulb, works, hit a bump, no work, hit another bump, works.
Upon further investigation I found the wire harness that the bulb holder plugs into had a burnt spot just like your fuel pump harness.
Bought the bumper turn signal repair kit and I now have a working turn signal once again.

You can see that it is the exact same type of connector as your fuel pump, one plug, just like yours, was burnt and the wire inside was not making a solid connection all the time.

Ya I'd say a harness too. You likely have bad contacts (rusted) between the fuel pump connector and the harness connection. With that burn you'll need a new harness anyway, so start there. If it happens again there is a electrical issue that will require further investigation.

You're right! I just hot wired the fuel pump around that harness and she primed and fired right up! Thanks!

Found one for $38 + shipping here: http://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts/...ek+Google+Base

Rather than $55 + shipping at Rovers North....

Let us know how it turns out for you.
Make sure you use plenty of dielectric grease on all of the plugs.

I also posted this thread over on LandRoversOnly....

Pretty interesting responses however they do make a lot of sense. Should I go ahead and replace the pump also?

From the other thread it looks like your at around 113k miles? If it hasn't been replaced I would surely replace it. How long have you owned the truck? Any knowledge of it has being replaced? Mine crapped out on me @ 87k. Fuel pumps on rover tend to fail at around 100k. If it has been replaced I would just get a new harness and see what happens. Also follow up on those ground locations recommended on the other forum.

P.S. You may want to put your mileage in your signature on this forum too.

I would either try the bulb repair kit or the replacement plug from NAPA/Autozone if they are a direct fit.

To burn it does require a high current draw, so check those grounds.

Good Luck with it.
