Ok, if it will not move out of park then you need to start the engine and have someone press the brake pedal while you check and see if the brake lights work.
If they do not you need a new brake light switch, it is on the back of the brake pedal.
No brake lights no shifting out of park.

Spike, I had popped my trim piece off, but instead of a standard nut it looks like a little spring clip or something. My key had suddenly gotten funky. I ended up removing the upper and lower plastic parts on the steering column to expose the switch, it now turns smoother than ever. It is like the cover was impeding it. Right now I am driving with that black cover off.

If that nut is to tight you will not be able to move the gear shift.
I have no idea what year they switched over from a nut on the shift cable to that spring thingy thing.

Looks like my problem is the brake light switch. Had the vehicle towed today to the garage.

Mine has the dingy springy thingy. I could not tell whether to try to adjust it or not.

Today it worked fine this morning, but the next time I wanted to go somewhere, it would not budge at all. I sprayed some PB50 lube in it and with some finagaling it finally started working again.

I am considering taking it completely apart and subbing a few switches to replace the whole damn thing. Anyone got any info on the internals of the key mechanism. I remember one redneck who busted his off completely and used a screwdriver to start his with after that.

Anyone know any reason not to completely remove that funky bastard?
