If the thermostatic coil was packed with crud, it probably was from the silicon fluid leaking out of the clutch. If the fluid leaks out, they don't work good. Symptoms will be high temperature when stopped or driving slow in line at the drive-through.

Driving at speed tends to cool the radiator without needing fan support. So, keep driving fast and furious and everything should be all right.
