Lightbulb 96 Discovery Diesel Upgrade???

About to get my hands on my second discovery See below!: 96 AWD 4.0 with around 180K. And I have been thinking about the possibility of replacing the stock engine with a used or remanufactured Diesel engine. Now unlike my 98 Discovery, this one is a 96 which means I have more options as far as used Diesels are concerned. In Europe their Land Rovers have TDI Diesels (I Believe) and from what I've gathered through various Rover sources, they can get a whopping 30MPG!!! But aside from improved MPG I'm looking for increased HP and Torque (preferably Torgue) I really want to maximize this Discoverys potential all round! So aside from having a low budget, and plenty of patience...
1.) where do I start?
2.)What type of Diesel should I go for?
3.) Any specific vehicle make/model I should focus my efforts on? (for example: I gather that Isuzu is a popular candiate for salvaging Diesel engines) But I'm not found of putting an Asian part in my European designed/built Rover!
4.) Does anyone on this forum have an extra Diesel they are willing to part with?
etc
5.)any other thoughts comments or suggestions from the Rover community?

I've always thought of doing this as well. Are you going to turn it into a manual as well? I'm assuming you'd have to change the transmission regardless as well as the transfer case. No?

First off it is full time four wheel drive not all wheel drive.
Second this horse has been beaten to death, made into dog food, eaten by a dog, then **** out into the yard and scooped up and put into a paper bag and set on a ex wife's front porch and set on fire and then stomped to put the fire out and the shoes that were used to put out the fire were then thrown into the trash.
Min cost is $5000 to do this mod, thats min.
That buys alot of gas.

Transfer case stays the same irc. The tranny does get swapped out for a diesel auto or manual. You cannot use the petrol trannys. So your cost jumps up considerably when you add in a tranny.

Easiest would be a 300Tdi since D1's came with them from the factory.
300Tdi has less HP than the V8 though.
Yes, Isuzu is an option, they were fitted to D110's in Australia.
