Default 96 Discovery Will not start. Fuel?

1996 Discovery

I drove home like everyday, parked and in the next morning it would not start?

1.I found the "check valve" on the fuel line. Sometimes it squirts gas and sometimes it does not?
2. It will start for a few seconds and then it dies. will start again in 5 minutes.

I am unsure if it is the pump or not, regulator? Plus I am pretty sure the filter is on the pump?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I have no ride now. Thanks ahead of time guys. George

the filter is not on the pump, its in line. do you have the RAVE manual? if your not getting fuel pressure at the rail i would check the filter first and then the pump.

Then you are not getting fuel. Download the RAVE(it is in my signature). Check your fuses and relays. See if you can hear the fuel pump come on when you turn the ignition on(but don't start the car). Do this be sticking your ear up to the fuel filler while someone turns on the ignition. If you hear the pump, then your pump should be fine. Check the fuel pressure on the fuel rail under the hood.

Also, according to RAVE, if the MAF is giving no signal, then it will shut the engine off after a few seconds.

A disco I has a filter in line. You can see it from the rear wheel well usually. How many miles are on the rover? I've read the fuel pumps last about 100k. Mine went out at 103k or something on my 96. Fortunately it wasn't advanced evap (no tethered cap, and only one connector on the pump) so it was the "cheap" pump. When I pulled the pump it had a burned spot on it.

I'd check for power at the pump with a meter.

The Disco has 160,000 on it. The newer engine has 100,000 supposedly? How can I tell if the MAF is getting a signal?

The fuel filter is behind the right rear wheels on the frame.
It needs to be changed every 30k at a minimum.
Sounds like your fuel pump is bad.
There is a access hatch under the carpet in the cargo area.

Remove the black panel under the carpet and pad in the rear cargo floorpan. The top of the fuel pump is right there.

If you click on the link in my signature you will find some photo albums of my early problems with my 97 DI. Since it is an "early" 97 it is also the Pre-AEL version. You can get a brand new one from RN for a hundred bucks.
