Default 98 Disco 1 Sudden No Start

I took the Disco for a good drive yesterday in some very wet/slushy weather and it was working fine.I parked it for a couple of hours and then no start. just cranks. The fuel pump comes on, and I checked quickly for spark, no go. Could the crank position sensor or coil pack go out all of a sudden like that? Any other suggestions?
Thanks a bunch!

Phil

A failed crankshaft position sensor will often cause your Land Rover Discovery to crank without starting or may cause it to die intermittently.

I usually pull a lead off a spark plug, plug a spare in, and ground it to the engine block and check for spark. If you have spark, it is most likely a fuel issue. No spark, most likely coil pack or something typically to do with the CPS.

Thank you. I was kinda dreading that. I'll try a CPS first, because it's likely cheaper. At least it's in a nice warm shop now, so I can catch up on some other fixings and maintenance. I'll have to wait for parts anyway. Who knows, I may actually get around to putting the rest of the interior back in and finish the stereo!

Cheers

If you are going to change out the CPS I would also suggest changing the VSS too - both are susceptible to failure and not a lot of extra money

Go with real LR parts for the VSS AMR1253 and Bosch for the CPS - so you don't need to replace for a cheaper part failure

Well the crank pos'n sensor showed up today from Rock Auto. I bought the NTK one. After what seemed like an hour of fiddling, I had it in. I was covered in dirt, oil and Krown Rust Control right up to the armpits! It would be hard to think of a less convenient location for this sensor without making it totally inaccessible. Anyway, it did the trick, and the Disco started right up. I was going to drop the tranny pan and change the ATF, but then I realized you need to drop the exhaust and x member to get the tranny pan off. I said eff it and just changed the fluid because I'm basically lazy.
Since it's already on the lift, I'll swap in the KYB shocks and galvanized front shock towers tomorrow, since I have 'em. Mebbe even throw a few more interior bits back in, who knows?

Cheers

I’m not a D1 guy, but on my D2 and P38 you don’t need to drop the exhaust or w-member to remove the trans pan.

Can anyone point me to a procedure for testing the crankshaft position sensor? I have a no-start issue w/ my Disco, and I'd like to make sure the CPS is the problem.
Thank you!

Not that I know of, unless you have some very fancy diagnostic equipment. They are not that expensive, but be warned, they are a PITA to Re and Re.
