Unhappy 98 Disco stumbling and stalling

Hello all;

My Disco started bucking and the RPM bouncing on the way home today. I was only a km from home so I kept on and it smoothed out. It started bucking again when I pulled into the driveway, then stalled. It will start, but runs like ****e and generally stalls when you put it in gear. It still has no codes and everything else checks out as norm.
Any ideas what the issue may be? I have a track day with the 7 on Friday, and this is my only tow vehicle. Any suggestions appreciated.

Cheers

Phil

I’m not the expert but the first thing I’d try would be some gas line antifreeze. I know it’s not the time of year for ice but the product will absorb any water in your fuel and allow it to go through the engine and be rid of it.

Thanks Harv, good idea. I have lots around, being from Canuckistan like yourself, so it's worth a go.

Cheers

I think my first check would be plug wires and coil terminals. My coils have gotten pretty corroded in the past, especially the aluminum ones. Sometimes it takes a few (3 or 4) drive cycles to show a CEL, but with a reader you could see if any codes are pending, or keep driving it until you get a code.

Harv was bang on with his diagnosis. I put in two bottles of gas line anti-freeze and then filled it. It's running fine now. The ring for the fuel pump does not seal properly, and I drove through a major rainstorm yesterday. There was water on the top of the tank, so I'm sure that's how it got in there. It looks like I'll make my track day. Thanks again Harv!

Cheers

Glad you found it.
Water in gas is often one of the trickiest problems to figure out. Some guys throw parts at a vehicle till they throw their hands up and think about water in the gas (last). What a relief ..for you. Cheers!
