aftermarket parts
have a 97 disco 1 that needs steering parts. wonder if anyone has an informed opinion on aftermarket vs OEM parts (for example tie rod ends) cause there is big diff in cost. Wish I could say that money is no object but alas and alack. Thanks for any input.
Here's my two cents worth. Sometimes I save a few dollars with aftermarket parts that aren't too critical for vehicle operation, or can be easily replaced if needed. Things like turn signal lenses or mud flaps. Tie rod ends might fit in this category, especially if there is a good brand available. It might depend on your driving (off-road) habits. I bought Moog bushings and tie-rod ends for great prices from Rock Auto, and have not been sorry.
On the other hand, there is no call to scrimp on internal engine parts or drive train components. Any labor intensive replacement deserves the best parts, since you don't want to have to do it over again. On the other other hand, my trucks have a lot of miles on them, and I don't drive them much. How many miles am I likely to put on these rigs? Probably not enough to wear out the new parts. In the final analysis, it is a personal choice. If I am saving money by using my own labor, shouldn't I buy really good parts, and use really good chemicals? Most of the parts dealers offer inexpensive alternatives. Most of the time they work out fine, but not always. My 94 has a distributor cap, the OEM cap was just as sloppy as the cheap-o brand. Probably all made at the same factory.... Sorry if I said too much.
