Air Filter and Engine Hesitation

Air Filter and Engine Hesitation
Been upgrading my 'new' 96 Disco. Expensive day today...put on 4 new tires, new spark plugs, new MAF sensor, new thermostat, added coolant, and transmission fluid and a new air filter. So after all that, I take off and the engine begins to hesitate as I accelerate and continues to do so as I drive around. One item of note is there was no air filter in the housing previously. So I take the air filter out and engine is working fine again. Clearly, the filter is preventing enough air from passing through the MAF and causing the engine to hesitate. Has anybody had this happen before and/or know how it can be fixed as I don't want to keep driving around without an air filter. Thanks!

How does the MAF look?
If its been running no filter I would take off the MAF, boot, clean MAF with special cleaner and clean throttle body good, remove IACV also and clean, no telling what's got in there, a scanner might help also see what sensor is saying what
How is the fuel pressure reg vacume hose?
Get used to spending money for a while these are usually very neglected in the maintenance dept
Buy an ultra gauge

The MAF I just bought brand new so that shouldn't be the issue. . No idea about fuel pressure or the IACV. On the air filter housing there is an extension that protrudes out the front...looks like a large spout almost. Is that for air intake into the filter? Reason I ask is there must have been a small fire in the engine compartment at some point and the fiberglass spout melted/warped and is mostly closed now. Could that be the issue? Thanks

Trumpet removed and all is well! Very thankful for such an easy fix! Now on to the fuel filter. Old one is completely rusted on....took it to jiffy lube to see if they could get it off with no luck. They said I'd need to replace the whole fuel line but going to cut and couple it instead. Hopefully that will do the trick!
