Jafir, those inexpensive fuel pump assemblies are only for NON-AEL trucks, '97 and older. Some '97s, 98's, and '99's are all AEL trucks and the entire fuel pump assembly is quite expensive. There is nothing wrong with replacing just the pump itself, if done correctly. Assuming the fittings on the top of the assembly are in good shape all you need is the Airtex(or similar) pump, 18" of fuel line and 4 fuel line clamps. The key is to not make the replacement lines too long. If you do they will kink when the assembly compresses.

I have done the pump only replacement in a Moab parking lot, its not that difficult.
As far as soldering, there is none involved to install the new pump. However, there are a couple solder connections on the assembly itself you will want to check.

Tweak, knowing the year of your Disco and whether or not its AEL would help a LOT.

 

Previous post showed him with a 94. That's what I was assuming. If the pump went bad in my 03, I would consider repairing it with the kit, due to cost.... But I'd probably still just buy the assembly.

 

Not entirely true in my opinion. Mostly on the low-end meaning if it's cheap, it's probably cheaply made. But just because you spend the money doesn't mean you're going to get value for money.

I've wasted a lot of money with a couple of the suppliers touting to be upright or Rover community oriented. In my experience and opinion, it takes a pair of ***** to recommend a supplier these days. Best you can do in the Rover parts arena is say I've had good experiences with __________.

 

....and just curious guys, have you all had your gas tanks swapped out. Has anyone done it recently under the Rover program(me)? Hyjack?

 

I didn't even know about the Disco recall when I had my D1. I thought it was just for the RRC with metal tanks. Turns out both types have a recall of some sort.

 

i went to the dealer a couple years back and they said they would call me for an appointment but never did. i'm wondering if i can get it done now for free. new lines too as they apparently break easily...which i don't doubt. i bet i can find the letter from landrover.

 

fail, the airtex doesn't have the same electrical connections, it doesn't even come with a pigtail with the correct plug to hook to the pump.

 

Tweak, what year is your truck? What AirTex part # were you using?

AEL and NON-AEL trucks use the same pump, just in different pump assemblies.

I bought my fuel pump from AutoZone, they price matched Advance Auto, it was still $600 but it came with a lifetime warranty.

 

It's a 94, the one you pictured looks like the one I got, I don't have a plug to connect it. Mine has two "blade" type connections, like on the back of a speaker. I don't see any way of making a connection short of having the proper connecter for that pump. The auto part guy dug me out two lead wires that stabbed on the prongs of the plug but I'm not shoving two bare wires an eighth of an inch apart down into my gas tank.
