Apologies if this has been covered before, but I ran a search and couldn't find any general discussion on this. I'm looking into buying a Disco 1, and wondering how they rank in terms of serviceability / difficulty of finding parts. I hear a lot of people refer to them as being easy to work on, but are there any (important) parts that are getting hard to come by? This would be the oldest car I've owned by ~5-10 years, so this is somewhat new territory for me. I live walking distance to where I work so I can stand to be without a car for a couple of weeks if something ever craps out, but I'm wondering whether these are getting to the point where you'd have to spend a month scouring eBay or the forums for random parts. Any thoughts on this?

One of the nice features of these trucks is that parts are fairly easy to find. There are several US suppliers specializing in Land Rover parts, both new and used. Parts can also be obtained from the UK without much trouble.

I have read that tail light assemblies are getting rare, but cheap aftermarket parts could be used there without degrading performance. It may take an investment of some time and money to get an old rig up to snuff, but once you get there, you will have a serviceable and reliable vehicle.

 

The Discovery 1 tail /brake light bulb holders are impossible to find. They use a dual filament bulb the other bulbs on the D1 use a single filament bulb. You can jam them in but they won't work right, and the socket doesn't fit in the housing. They are prone to melting when the wrong size bulbs are used in them. (not an 1157 bulb or an LED bulb!) I got an entire tail light assembly just because I couldn't find the socket, and when it arrived, the socket was not included. the others were there...

 

I purchased a few complete assemblies , got lucky and they came.with the bulb sockets. I heard the same.thing about them getting scarce , so I picked some up. One set I had to take the whole d1, it was missing a bunch of stuff but the tail light's were still in .
