The transfer case went out or the transmission went out?

I'm confused...how did you kill a transfer case because of not knowing how to drive a manual tranny?

Okay so here is what I think the misinformation is..

The transmission is: your gears 1,2,3,4,5 whatever plus Reverse

The transfer case is: you hi, low, hi-locked, low-locked settings for off roading, etc..

Interesting, good questions posed. OP, also I have a transfer case out of a 94 D1 spare if interested, (or even needed) will have the CDL linkage etc.

If you were switching from high/low range or engaging the CDL maybe you didn't get it quite re-engaged, they can be a bit stubborn, thus giving the illusion of a transfer case problem. I find doing it on a slight uphill slope if possible helps so you can let the truck roll back a bit until the transfer case locks into gear properly.

FYI- From what I can see in the manual the STD & Auto transfer cases LOOK the same, but that doesn't mean they are, I've never done a side by side comparison. And I'm only looking at a manual (book) for a D1. It's quite possible the D2 drivetrain may have slight differences, especially on the BMW powered ones. (I'm actually hoping one day to put the 4.4 BMW in my 5spd D1, with a 6spd Getrag out of a 5 series).
