Default Ball joints...

Quick question.

Do I need any special tool to remove the 4 ball joins from the front of my 96 discovery or simple matter of removing the pin, bottom bolt then unscrewing them?

Just did that last weekend. I don't even bother with the pin, just brrrapp with an 19mm impart socket and gun, as the new ones all have nylock nuts now.

Three methods to get them out;

bang on the bolt directly (not hard enough to mushroom the end, obviously)

two hammers - hold one on one side of the housing, touching, and whack the opposite side with the other. (preferred method)

pickle fork - pickle forks suck, and are for pussies.

Make sure you do two things - get the new ball joints with zerks on them, DAP sells a kit where you get all 4 for $70. Also, while you have it out of the vehicle, take your track rod out and rehab the adjustment threaded parts, coat liberally with neverseez. You can align the vehicle yourself with a tape measure, which is awesome. YOu will need your track rod adjustment working so you can get the steering wheel straight when you are done. Tighter (shorter) moves steering wheel left, looser (longer) moves the steering wheel right.

good luck

When I did my rod ends, they were pretty seized in the bar. I had to remove the complete bar, put the rod end in a vice, heat liberally, and use a pipe wrench to loosen. Mine were a PITA.

X2 on using an anti-seize
