Default battery, brake lights, stuck in park...

We have a 1995 Discovery and a few months ago the brake lights stopped working (they stay lit up). Took it to mechanic and he replaced brake light switch, all was good and brake lights worked for a few weeks but now they dont work again. Took it back and they said they couldn't figure it out.

I had read disconnecting the battery helps so I tried that but brake lights still didnt work. Fuses are all good. Two days after disconnecting battery the car dies and cant keep a charge and was stuck in park!! We had it towed to mechanic and are waiting to hear back...

This is our first land rover (had it about a year) and I know basics about cars but that's about it..... any thoughts on the root of the problem?

the brake light switch also controls the solenoid that locks the shifter handle in park...sounds like the switch is broken / bad/ wiring unhooked from it .....look there first

some disco 1 had two switches on the brake pedal arm, one is for the brake lights and the other is for the cruise control. maybe the wrong one got replaced? or it could be not adjusted right.

got my brake switch from O'Rieleys and they had the wrong listing for the switch. There are two switches, one for automatic trans and one for manual trans. they are different and luckily I messed with it before I ordered one so I knew what to order. I suppose it could be a fuse too..

LOL problem solved….
I started checking all my other fuses, just because. Fuse f6 was blown. Replaced it and for some reason that did the trick??????

Anyway. I don’t understand it, but I won’t question this success.
thanks for all the support here.

Here’s a neat trick for you if you ever get stuck in Park/can't shift. Get a paperclip and jumper the two tabs on the rear door glass together. Push the rear defrost button and you’ll be able to shift out of Park.
