So 3 times a week I drive past a Camel Trophy D1 that sits in a parking lot with a for sale sign on it. I finally stopped last week after driving by it for 2 years to take a peek. Dont know what year it is but it's all there and looks pretty solid. Interior is clean and in great shape, body is straight and not rusty but needs a little love to bring it back to its former glory. Nothing a good detail wouldnt fix though. Has a 4.6 badge on the fender and all of the Camel Trophy stuff everywhere. Anyway there is no price on it so I was wondering what these things go for? It says call for info but I wanted to get a little background before chatting up the owner. I have never even seen another one, much less one for sale so I'm clueless. I'm assuming it gets driven because sometimes its there, sometimes its not. Also is there a way to spot a fake? It looks legit but with rare vehicles you never know.

 

2 yrs sitting there. maybe go with low end of Kelly blue book price and forget its a Camel. it' s yellow?

 

I'd say it's not a real Camel Trophy truck. Trophy truck never had V8s. Does it have a roll cage? Is it manual? Trophy trucks also have a specific winch bumper and a mantec snorkel which look like this:



It should also look a little bit beaten up... it's supposed to have crossed the jungle. With pictures it would be easier to tell.

 

Is the roof rack mounted on the gutters or through the roof? When people make replicas most of the time they don't use the proper through the roof mount.

 

I'll take some pics and let you guys decide. Its yellow and has the right bumper and roof rack as far as I can tell. Don't recall if it was a manual, I didn't want to poke around to much late at night.

 

Does it have the solid steel rims, alloys or do they have holes in them?

 

And that would very from year to year with the camel trophy. A lot of the earlier years had wolf rims, but 97 had alloys.

 

It had what looked like solid black steel wheels

 

I did see one listed about a year ago that was suppossedly used as a backup/support vehicle. They said it was not actually used in the competion but did travel from dealership to dealership after serving as a support vehicle.

It participated in special events, dealership outings, demo rides and other VIP uses for a few years. It had extremely low miles on it, had documentation supporting the history that was claimed and they wanted big bucks for it.

If it is real, it should have supporting documentation. Chances are it is most likely a replica someone did. See what the guy has and what he is asking. Main thing is how solid a shape is it in.

 

Sounds like a poor replica if it had BLACK wheels.
Probably an XD with faded paint, haha!
