Default Checking an Ignition Coil Pack

Trying to check a coil pack using an Ohm meter for resistance. I have a 99 D1 4.0L V8. I’m looking in the RAVE, but the only RAVE manual I can seem to find is for a 95/96 D1. The only resistance parameter I can find for ignition coils is for an Mpi 2.0 L… not sure if this resistance parameter is the same for coil packs on a 4.0 V8.

For the Mpi 2.0L the normal resistance range should be 0.4 to 0.61 Ohms at 20°C (69°F), does anyone know if this is the same for the 4.0L?

I’m checking the coil pack because of a P1316 code. The spark plugs are new, the spark plug wires are new… just did a head job.

Thanks!

All RAVE can be found in the linked google drive. That said and as you noted, I can only find specs for the Mpi, not the V8.

You may find some more helpful info in the "gems_obd" document and the "GEMS_Systems" documents

96-99 D1's use Mitsubishi coil packs. You might find more info on them thru a Mitsubishi Forum as far as testing. LR was really good during those days to just sell/swap out the entire coil pack rail as 1 assembly vs going into deep diagnostics.

I noticed the aluminum colored HV terminals on my coils tend to get corrosion (white stuff). That is probably the main failure mode for the coils.

The low voltage side should show low ohms, and all four should be about the same. The high voltage side should show higher ohms, with all four about the same value.

Hope this helps.

I’m just check the connections that leads into each coil, it looks like they are all 1.2 ohms across the board… which is out of the range, but they’re all consistent so not sure if they should be replaced…

Consistent ohms means you did not find a problem. Now measure to the HV terminals (all eight).
