Default chirping noise on 97 Disco I

I recently purchased a 97 Discovery I with about 98K miles on it. The first week of ownership it overheated and I had to replace the thermostat. About a week later it developed a chipping noise that has become more intense as the days go by. After reading through several forums I thought it could be the U joints. However I do not believe this to be true at this time. Correct me if I am wrong. The Chirping noise is noticeable while sitting in Park and revving the engine but not while idling. The noise becomes more intense. when the vehicle is in drive and accelerating. When I back off the gas it goes away or becomes less noticeable. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I would look at your water pump too and make sure it isn't weeping. Very rarely is the cause of an overheat actually a t-stat on these babies.

Bad water pump bearing, make sure you replace the fan clutch at the same time.
My truck did the exact same thing when my fan clutch went bad and locked up full time.

Could be water pump, but I'd look to the idler bearing, or another bearing like the alternator or AC compressor.
Idler bearing is the most common culprit and is about $8 from NAPA, SKF 6203-2RSJ.

Bad u-joints won't make noises unless you're moving, I agree with everyone, in park, it's not the u-joints.

Remove the fan belt and then spin everything by hand as fast as you can and listen for the chirp.
If it chirps either feed it or replace it.

my chirping is coming from my water pump. problem is, i just replaced it about a year ago. it's not constant, it comes and goes. does a chirping water pump mean replacement?
