Considering an 04
Im starting to get the itch, i seem to get it once a year around this time. I have been considering a discovery II as of late. I kinda just want to start over and I like the newer look. And my past 3 vehicles have lasted me about a year.
If I. Were to get a dII there would be some negatives and positives.
Some of the positives to the dII would be:
Newer look*
Newer headlights
Bigger rims
Bigger engine
Chance to build up again.*
Negatives are longer rear overhang
Maintenance
More to go wrong?
No parts at junk yard
I never really cared for bigger rims, however on a land rover the bigger rims just look right. Smaller 16" rims with 33's just don't.
I also would like the bigger engine.
One of the downsides to getting rid of my truck would be the maintenance I did on it, and all the parts I put into it head gasket and water pump to name a few.*
Is the 04 offered without the rear air suspension? And is it offered without the ace?*

However, I DID read that Spike is of the mind that the 2004 is the best Discovery ever built <-- and that is not a recommendation I would take lightly.
I also really like some of the newer features, but think I will just replace the headlights with the "cool" DII ones (straight replacement according to others) and invest in a new paint job and perhaps a second set of tires/rims just for wheeling.
Well, until I can afford to buy one with a Super Charger so I can get into trouble REALLY fast - like before I have time to think better of it.
Or course, by the time that happens, we will probably be back to riding horses...and I hear that they are really dependable - but getting parts for them are a bitch!

Yes, the rear air suspension was an option (SLS).
Yes, ACE was also an option, both options could be added to different models and are mutually exclusive.
*I have ACE on my 99 and love the system and don't hear of many people having problems with it or costly repairs. It handles like a sportscar...just a really big, heavy, slow one. But yes, its another option that isn't necessary.
If I were going to look for a 04 today, I'd find one with a boat anchor for an engine already (pay pennies for it) and drop a new Turner Engineering engine into it...because I'd plan on keeping it for a long, long time. I've seen very good condition 03-04's with crap for engines go for 3-4k. 6k or less if you drop it in yourself for a new Turner, and you're at 9k anyways without a ticking time bomb!
In the mean time, i'm going to keep converting my 99 to look like an 04!

Converting a D1 to the '99-'02 D2 headlights is a staright-forward, no-mod 15 min deal. The '03/'04 headlights is a semi-major undertaking to fit in a D1
I have been seriously contmplating getting an '04 also. I will definitly look for one with a proven head gasket job and as complete of maintenence records as possible.
But I'm keeping my D1 as I have way too much($ and labor) into it to get rid of it. Plus, then I can really turn it into an offroad rig.

I can't wait!
